Monument for the Heroes of Red Army, 1030 Vienna
Behind the fountain on Schwarzenbergplatz stands a monument to honor the heroes of Red Army, it was designed by the Russian officer Major S. G. Jakovlev and erected in 1945. Restoration work on the monument was carried out from November 2008 to April 2009. Above all, artificial stone elements like the Red Army soldiers on the entablature and columns were badly damaged due to heavy erosion and corroded rebars. These bars were treated with an anti-rust primer (Bleiminium). Spaces were filled with artificial stone mortar to match the original material. Over the years damaged sheet metal had caused serious salt contamination on parts of the entablature. We were able to mitigate the effects using cellulose-based poultices. During restoration work the statues of the soldiers were vandalized using red paint and we had to reclean them.
